I received the new Pottery Barn Kids catalog, yeah the Holiday edition, and I'm DYING over here. Why? Well, I'm glad you asked!
First off it's important that you know that I really want to incorporate some sort of advent calendar for Christmas this year. I think Isabella would have so much fun with it. I've been thinking about how I can make one for some time now. Although I've got a few ideas I've been milling around, along came PBK and BAM! It literally knocked the breath right out of me. Check this baby out:
Pottery Barn describes this little gem as follows: "The days before Christmas are exciting for kids, which is why we made sure our countdown calendar was extra-special. Take a close look and you’ll see 25 meticulously designed pockets, each sized for a treat, message, or tiny gift. Sewn of felt with appliqués and decorative embroidery. Personalization is available."
What? It's embroidered and it can be personalized?!?! OMG! Somebody please get me a brown paper bag!!!
So, I get to thinking,... can I make this? Probably not! But if I tried, would it be as nice? Definitely not! And if I try would I really save money since I don't own an embroidery machine? Absolutely not!
So what's a girl to do when she's found the Advent Calendar of her dreams? Well buy it, of course!
But here's my dilemma: Our current series at church is about how to get yourself out of debt and how to better manage your money,... not let your money manage you. Scott and I are thrilled about getting serious about a budget, and saying no to certain things now so that we can say yes to many things later.
Do you think this qualifies as a "Say No Now" type purchase with a $69 ticket price plus $6.50 to have it personalized? Really? Even though there is no tax and free shipping? And do you realize the years of use we can get out this baby? It would practically pay for itself after oh I don't know, three Christmases,...
Anyone out there with me?

Speaking from experience, I would not go with an advent calendar like this. As the kids get older, they will totally try to take the candy out of the dates early, so you can't keep the candy (or trinket, or whatever) in the actual pocket. Then like for us, we use candy because lord knows we don't need 25x3 trinkets MORE laying around for me to step on....and they want the candy right in the morning when they wake up. Then, you have to put all three of the same kind in there or they freak out because so and so got this one and I want that one! Oh, can you tell I am dreading taking ours out? :) I sound like the grinch....but really I think I am going to lose ours this year. :)
Well I have to say it is AWESOME but OUCH that's a pretty penny. You do such awesome work are you sure you don't want to make one?? I mean you can buy a Blank Karen Foster advent calendar for $19.99 and I'm sure you have TONS of paper and embellishments already on hand to make that baby AMAZING! ok, that probably isn't want you wanted to hear...
OK, so Michelle has me wondering if I should just bite the bullet and make one and Lynn has me wondering if I should have one at all,...
Not exactly where I thought this would go, but Pastor Craig would be so proud (and besides it saves me from having to have the conversation with Scott).
Thanks girls!
we have one that we got from Hallmark...not so expensive but you basically put magnetic tree decor on each day as you count down....the only problem is that they FIGHT over who gets to do it...so....even though they may not fight now...(mine didnt either) they will...no matter how much you threaten or how much you pray that they will love each other...they will fight...it is a sibling thing. ~ good luck...i bought mine the box that Michelle refers to and actually use it as an allowance box....they do their chores each day...they get the money in the box...sometimes it $1 sometimes $.50 and sometimes $5...they never know!!! :-)
Liz, I have been drooling over this same catalog! I understand your dilemma as I would have a hard time justifying this purchase as well...maybe it will go on sale after Christmas???? ;)
